TERMINATOR NOW: The Rise Of The Machines And A Post-Human Future - Man Builds "Scarlett Johansson" Robot From Scratch To "Fulfil Childhood Dream", And It's SCARILY LIFELIKE!

The robot has been modelled on a Hollywood actress. REUTERS/Bobby Yip

April 1, 2016 - TECHNOLOGY - A humanoid obsessive has built an incredibly realistic female robot from scratch - and it's got more than a passing resemblance to Avengers star Scarlett Johansson.

Ricky Ma, a 42-year-old product and graphic designer, has spent more than $50,000 (£34,000) and a year and a half creating the female robot prototype, Mark 1.

The designer confirmed the scarily lifelike humanoid had been modelled on a Hollywood star, but wanted to keep her name under wraps.

It responds to a set of programmed verbal commands spoken into a microphone and has moving facial expressions, but Ricky says creating it wasn't easy.He said he was not aware of anyone else in Hong Kong building humanoid robots as a hobby and that few in the city understood his ambition.

Ricky said: "When I was a child, I liked robots. Why? Because I liked watching animation. All children loved it. There were Transformers, cartoons about robots fighting each other and games about robots.

"After I grew up, I wanted to make one. But during this process, a lot of people would say things like, 'Are you stupid? This takes a lot of money. Do you even know how to do it? It's really hard'."Besides movements of its arms and legs, turning its head and bowing, Ma's robot, with blonde hair and hazel eyes can form detailed facial expressions. Ricky has dressed 'her' in a crop top and a grey skirt.

In response to the compliment, "Mark 1, you are so beautiful", the robot bows as the 'muscles' around its eyes relax and corners of its lips lift, forming a smile.

It then replies: "Hehe, thank you."

A 3D-printed skeleton lies beneath Mark 1's silicone skin, covering its mechanical and electronic interior.

About 70% of its body was created using 3D printing technology.

Creating the robot, Ma adopted a trial-and-error method in which he encountered obstacles ranging from burned-out motors to the robot losing its balance.

"When I started building it, I realised it would involve dynamics, electromechanics and programming. I have never studied programming, how was I supposed to code?

The creation took Ricky more than a year and a half to make. REUTERS/Bobby Yip

"Additionally, I needed to build 3D models for all the parts inside the robot. Also, I had to make sure the robot's external skin and its internal parts could fit together. When you look at everything together, it was really difficult," said Ma.

But with Mark 1 standing behind him, Ma said he had no regrets.

"I figured I should just do it when the timing is right and realise my dream. If I realise my dream, I will have no regrets in life," he said.Ma, who believes the importance of robots will grow, hopes an investor will buy his prototype, giving him the capital to build more.

He wants to write a book about his experience to help other enthusiasts.

The rise of robots is among disruptive labour market changes that the World Economic Forum warns will lead to a net loss of 5.1 million jobs over the next five years.

PLANETARY TREMORS: Strong 6.1 Magnitude Earthquake Hits Off Papua New Guinea - USGS! [MAPS + TECTONIC SUMMARY]

USGS earthquake location.

April 1, 2016 - PAPUA NEW GUINEA - A strong 6.1-magnitude earthquake struck off Papua New Guinea's northern coast on Saturday (Apr 2), the US Geological Survey said, with no immediate tsunami warning issued.

The shallow quake hit at 5.24am local time (1924 GMT Friday) about 120 kilometres (75 miles) northeast of Angoram and over 700 kilometres from the island's capital Port Moresby, USGS said.

No damage or injuries were immediately reported.

USGS shakemap intensity.

The Hawaii-based Pacific Tsunami Warning Center had no alerts on its website following the quake.

Quakes are common on the island nation that lies on the 4,000-kilometre-long Pacific Australia plate, which forms part of the "Ring of Fire", a hotspot for seismic activity due to friction between tectonic plates. - Channel News Asia.

Seismotectonics of the New Guinea Region and Vicinity

The Australia-Pacific plate boundary is over 4000 km long on the northern margin, from the Sunda (Java) trench in the west to the Solomon Islands in the east. The eastern section is over 2300 km long, extending west from northeast of the Australian continent and the Coral Sea until it intersects the east coast of Papua New Guinea. The boundary is dominated by the general northward subduction of the Australia plate.

Along the South Solomon trench, the Australia plate converges with the Pacific plate at a rate of approximately 95 mm/yr towards the east-northeast. Seismicity along the trench is dominantly related to subduction tectonics and large earthquakes are common: there have been 13 M7.5+ earthquakes recorded since 1900. On April 1, 2007, a M8.1 interplate megathrust earthquake occurred at the western end of the trench, generating a tsunami and killing at least 40 people. This was the third M8.1 megathrust event associated with this subduction zone in the past century; the other two occurred in 1939 and 1977.

USGS plate tectonics for the region.

Further east at the New Britain trench, the relative motions of several microplates surrounding the Australia-Pacific boundary, including north-south oriented seafloor spreading in the Woodlark Basin south of the Solomon Islands, maintain the general northward subduction of Australia-affiliated lithosphere beneath Pacific-affiliated lithosphere. Most of the large and great earthquakes east of New Guinea are related to this subduction; such earthquakes are particularly concentrated at the cusp of the trench south of New Ireland. 33 M7.5+ earthquakes have been recorded since 1900, including three shallow thrust fault M8.1 events in 1906, 1919, and 2007.

The western end of the Australia-Pacific plate boundary is perhaps the most complex portion of this boundary, extending 2000 km from Indonesia and the Banda Sea to eastern New Guinea. The boundary is dominantly convergent along an arc-continent collision segment spanning the width of New Guinea, but the regions near the edges of the impinging Australia continental margin also include relatively short segments of extensional, strike-slip and convergent deformation. The dominant convergence is accommodated by shortening and uplift across a 250-350 km-wide band of northern New Guinea, as well as by slow southward-verging subduction of the Pacific plate north of New Guinea at the New Guinea trench. Here, the Australia-Pacific plate relative velocity is approximately 110 mm/yr towards the northeast, leading to the 2-8 mm/yr uplift of the New Guinea Highlands.

Whereas the northern band of deformation is relatively diffuse east of the Indonesia-Papua New Guinea border, in western New Guinea there are at least two small (less than 100,000 km²) blocks of relatively undeformed lithosphere. The westernmost of these is the Birds Head Peninsula microplate in Indonesia's West Papua province, bounded on the south by the Seram trench. The Seram trench was originally interpreted as an extreme bend in the Sunda subduction zone, but is now thought to represent a southward-verging subduction zone between Birds Head and the Banda Sea.

There have been 22 M7.5+ earthquakes recorded in the New Guinea region since 1900. The dominant earthquake mechanisms are thrust and strike slip, associated with the arc-continent collision and the relative motions between numerous local microplates. The largest earthquake in the region was a M8.2 shallow thrust fault event in the northern Papua province of Indonesia that killed 166 people in 1996.

The western portion of the northern Australia plate boundary extends approximately 4800 km from New Guinea to Sumatra and primarily separates Australia from the Eurasia plate, including the Sunda block. This portion is dominantly convergent and includes subduction at the Sunda (Java) trench, and a young arc-continent collision.

In the east, this boundary extends from the Kai Islands to Sumba along the Timor trough, offset from the Sunda trench by 250 km south of Sumba. Contrary to earlier tectonic models in which this trough was interpreted as a subduction feature continuous with the Sunda subduction zone, it is now thought to represent a subsiding deformational feature related to the collision of the Australia plate continental margin and the volcanic arc of the Eurasia plate, initiating in the last 5-8 Myr. Before collision began, the Sunda subduction zone extended eastward to at least the Kai Islands, evidenced by the presence of a northward-dipping zone of seismicity beneath Timor Leste. A more detailed examination of the seismic zone along it's eastern segment reveals a gap in intermediate depth seismicity under Timor and seismic mechanisms that indicate an eastward propagating tear in the descending slab as the negatively buoyant oceanic lithosphere detaches from positively buoyant continental lithosphere. On the surface, GPS measurements indicate that the region around Timor is currently no longer connected to the Eurasia plate, but instead is moving at nearly the same velocity as the Australia plate, another consequence of collision.

Large earthquakes in eastern Indonesia occur frequently but interplate megathrust events related to subduction are rare; this is likely due to the disconnection of the descending oceanic slab from the continental margin. There have been 9 M7.5+ earthquakes recorded from the Kai Islands to Sumba since 1900. The largest was the great Banda Sea earthquake of 1938 (M8.5) an intermediate depth thrust faulting event that did not cause significant loss of life.

INFRASTRUCTURE COLLAPSE: Bridge Collapse In Kolkata, India - At Least 24 People Killed, Many Others Trapped Under The Rubble; Many Vehicles Destroyed! [PHOTOS + VIDEOS]

April 1, 2016 - KOLKATA, INDIA - FIVE CONSTRUCTION COMPANY officials have been arrested by Indian police after a flyover bridge collapsed killing at least 24 people.

Rescuers said today there was no hope of finding any more survivors after clearing the crumbled concrete and twisted metal rods from an overpass that collapsed onto a crowded Kolkata neighbourhood, killing at least 24 people and injuring more than 80.

Sixty-seven people were pulled from the debris alive, and the wreckage has been was cleared.

“There is no possibility of finding any person alive,” said SS Guleria, deputy inspector general of the India’s National Disaster Response Force.

Engineers are being consulted about a part of the bridge still hanging over the disaster area, after which workers will “slowly start dismantling this particular section to avoid any collateral damage to houses around it.”

Arrests

Police arrested five officials from a Hyderabad-based construction company contracted in 2007 to build the overpass, and sealed its Kolkata office.

The officials from the IVRCL Infrastructure Co. are being investigated for culpable homicide, punishable with life imprisonment, and criminal breach of trust, which carries a prison sentence of up to seven years, police said.

The company signed a contract in 2007 to build the overpass, and was far behind schedule for the project’s completion.

The partially constructed overpass had spanned nearly the width of the street and was designed to ease traffic through the densely crowded Bara Bazaar neighborhood in the capital of the east Indian state of West Bengal. Within hours of concrete being poured into a framework of steel girders on Thursday, about 100 metres of the overpass collapsed.

“I heard an explosion, a solid one,” said resident Rabindra Kumar Gupta, who had been home eating lunch. “My apartment shook. The whole building shook. When I looked outside, there was a lot of smoke.”

Smashed yellow taxis, a crushed truck, destroyed rickshaws and the legs of trapped people jutted from the fallen girders and concrete.

The construction company was far behind schedule for the overpass.

“We completed nearly 70% of the construction work without any mishap,” IVRCL official KP Rao said yesterday. He was not among those detained on Friday. “We have to go into the details to find out whether the collapse was due to any technical or quality issue.”

Police said 39 of the more than 80 people taken to hospitals were still being treated Friday morning.

Challenging

As workers in yellow hard-hats operated huge cranes, bulldozers and other equipment to clear the rubble and pry apart the concrete slabs this morning, crowds of people waited anxiously to see if neighbours and friends had survived. The intersection had been a place where street vendors and service workers regularly plied their trades.

“There used to be a tailor who sat here on this corner. We wonder about him. A cigarettes and tobacco vendor — we knew everyone who used to stay around this crossing,” resident Pankaj Jhunjhunwala said.
Rescuers also used dogs and special cameras to find people who were trapped, he said.

The operation was a “very, very challenging task,” said OP Singh, chief of the National Disaster Response Force.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who was in Washington at the time of the collapse, said he was “shocked and saddened,” according to a message on his Twitter account. - The Journal.

PLAGUES & PESTILENCES: The Ebola Virus - Liberia Suffers New Ebola Death, Months After Outbreak Declared Over!

Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone were hardest-hit by the worst-ever Ebola outbreak, which killed more than 11,300 people (AFP Photo/Carl de Souza)

April 1, 2016 - LIBERIA - A woman has died of Ebola in Liberia, months after the West African nation was declared free of the virus and weeks after neighbouring Guinea also recorded a new flare-up, health officials said on Friday.

The woman was brought to a clinic in Paynesville, just east of the capital Monrovia after falling ill and was later transferred to a hospital in the city. She died on Thursday.

"A young lady in her early thirties died of Ebola yesterday at the Redemption Hospital," a senior health ministry official said, adding that the government was preparing a statement on the new case.

More than 11,300 people have died over the past two years in the world's worst Ebola epidemic, nearly all of them in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone.

Liberia was declared free of active Ebola transmission in January, having passed 42 days, twice the length of the virus's incubation period - the time between catching the disease and getting its symptoms - without a new case.

While the World Health Organization said this week that West Africa's Ebola outbreak no longer constitutes an international public health risk, the region has continued to see small flare-ups even after countries received the all-clear.

Guinea announced new cases on March 17 just hours after Sierra Leone declared an end of active transmission, a fact that briefly meant that West Africa was officially free of Ebola.

Liberia subsequently closed its border with Guinea, fearing the potential spread of the outbreak onto its territory.

It was not immediately known whether the death in Liberia was linked to the new cases in Guinea. - Yahoo.

Lightning bolt hits house in Uganda, 2 children die

The incident occurred in Mbogo zone, Kikyusa sub-county in Luweero district, when Simon Katumba's house caught fire that killed Emelda Nakafeero, 3 and Kelvis Kiyimba, 2.

Shock gripped residents of Kikyusa town in Bamunanika when lightning struck a shop where there were 30 jerry cans of petrol inside sparking off a fire that killed two children and seriously injured their mother.

The Savannah Regional police spokesperson Lammeck Kigozi on Thursday identified the two dead children as: Melda Nakafeero a 3-year-old female years and Kevin Kiyimba a male aged two years.

Their mother Jennet Namugaya (24) was rushed to Mulago hospital after she sustained severe burns on her body.

Police fire fighters, who were deployed from the Savannah regional Police headquarters in Luweero town to stop the fire, suffered the wrath of residents who pelted with stones, furious at them for delaying to react.

They however managed to stop the fire from spreading to neighboring buildings.

It is the third time in a period of five years, that a similar catastrophe is hitting the area.
