FUK-U-SHIMA: Radioactivity Level Spikes 6,500 Times At Fukushima Well - Top Japan Nuclear Official Suggests Fukushima Reactors "Leaking Directly Into The Sea"!

October 18, 2013 - JAPAN - Radioactivity levels in a well near a storage tank at the Fukushima nuclear power plant in Japan have risen immensely on Thursday, the plant’s operator has reported.

Radioactivity Level Spikes 6,500 Times At Fukushima Well.

Officials of the Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) said on Friday they detected 400,000 becquerels per liter of beta ray-emitting radioactive substances - including strontium - at the site, a level 6,500 times higher than readings taken on Wednesday, NHK World reported.

The storage tank leaked over 300 tons of contaminated water in August, some of which is believed to have found its way into the sea through a ditch.

The well in question is about 10 meters from the tank and was dug to gauge leakage.

TEPCO said the findings show that radioactive substances like strontium have reached the groundwater. High levels of tritium, which transfers much easier in water than strontium, had already been detected.

Officials at TEPCO said they will remove any contaminated soil around the storage tank in an effort to monitor radioactivity levels of the water around the well.

The news comes after it has been reported a powerful typhoon which swept through Japan led to highly radioactive water near the crippled nuclear power plant being released into a nearby drainage ditch, increasing the risk of it flowing into the sea.

On Wednesday TEPCO said it had detected high levels of radiation in a ditch leading to the Pacific Ocean, and that it suspected heavy rains had lifted contaminated soil.

‘Decades-long problems being faced at Fukushima’
Robert Jacobs, a professor at Hiroshima Peace University, told RT the compounding problems at Fukushima Daiichi underscore one critical reality: no one really knows what to do.

“Nobody really knows how to solve the problems at Fukushima. There is nobody who has solutions. The problems at Fukushima are unprecedented, so even bringing in outside expertise, all that they can try to do is problem solve. There is no solution that other countries have that they can come in and fix the reactors, or rather, shut down the contamination, shut down the leaks.”

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s open request for advanced knowledge from overseas is a welcome step, as this will bring a higher degree of professionalism than Tepco has demonstrated since the crisis first erupted, Jacobs says. But even though, those experts will be at a loss to solve the immense problems they’ll be facing for decades at Fukushima.

Even in the one area where Japan could potentially help contain the disaster, the authorities have wavered, Konstantin Simonov from the Moscow-based Fund for Energy Security told RT.

“Fukushima should be treated just like Chernobyl – as a wreck that must be retired and put in a sarcophagus, with radioactive waste slowly and thoroughly utilized. Why does the problem persist at Fukushima? Because they can’t decide whether they want to close it or to keep it going.”

Tokyo Electric Power Company in fact seems reluctant to shut down Fukushima for good. Tepco is in fact pushing to reopen its Kashiwazaki Kariwa facility –  the world's largest nuclear power station –  which itself was shut down in 2007 following  reports of radioactive leaks in the wake of an earthquake.

In September, Japan announced its only operating nuclear reactor had been closed for maintenance, leaving the country with no nuclear power supply for only the second time in four decades.

Atomic power accounted for 30 percent of Japan’s energy needs prior to the Fukushima disaster, and the country was forced to increase fossil fuel imports to make up for the deficit.

As a result, Japan become the world’s largest importer of liquefied natural gas (LNG), prompting the world’s third-largest-economy to post its first trade deficit since the second oil shock 31 years ago.

Under these circumstances, the crisis gripping Fukushima will not be the only factor in deciding the fate of the country’s nuclear industry. - RT.

Tokyo Electric Power Co.’s efforts to keep radioactive water at its stricken Fukushima No. 1 power station from spilling into the sea have been ineffective, according to the Nuclear Regulation Authority.

“Our conclusion is that little effect has been seen” in Tepco’s measures, NRA Commissioner Toyoshi Fuketa said at an NRA panel meeting Tuesday, citing an increase in the levels of radioactive materials in some seawater samples collected near the plant.

Tepco is pumping up groundwater and has injected a water-stopping agent into the ground near the plant’s port in order to curb the flow of radioactive groundwater into the sea.

Despite such efforts, the levels of cesium-137 in seawater samples collected between the water intakes for reactors 1 and 2 inside the port rose to around 100 becquerels per liter this month from around 10 becquerels between late June and early July.

“It is reasonable to assume that the total amount of radioactive materials flowing into the sea has risen,” said Masaya Yasui, an emergency response official at the NRA secretariat.

Radioactive water from the damaged reactors “may be leaking directly into the sea instead of mixing with groundwater before making its way into the sea,” Fuketa said.

Last week, Tepco said the cesium level was 1.4 becquerels per liter of seawater sampled on Oct. 8 at a point 1 km from the seawall of the power plant, far below the safety limit of 10 becquerels for drinking water set by the World Health Organization.

But radioactive cesium was detected at the point for the first time since the firm started radioactivity checks there in mid-August.

The industry ministry now plans to introduce a system to examine the advisability of what nuclear experts call the “final” disposal method for highly radioactive waste from spent nuclear fuel every five years, a ministry official said Tuesday.

The ministry showed the drafted five-year review plan for the permanent underground disposal program to an expert panel the same day, hoping for the plan to facilitate finding of a municipality to host the final disposal facility.

Under the existing program, geological surveys and construction of a final disposal facility will be carried out for 30 years after a municipality agrees to host the facility. The facility will continue work to bring in and bury nuclear waste deep underground till it is shut down more than 40 years later. After the shutdown, the waste will be stored there for tens of thousands of years before it becomes no longer toxic to humans.

The ministry wants to revise the program to allow underground disposal to be replaced by safer disposal, if such a method is found in the more than 70 years till the facility’s closure.

The draft plan also clarifies the stance of putting priority on the host municipality’s preference on when to start operation of the disposal facility and shutter it.

The ministry aims to reflect the new plan in the final disposal program, which is now under review by the government, as well as the government’s basic energy policy.

Spent fuel at the nation’s atomic plants, all of which are currently offline, has been stored on-site at the facilities, but the storage pools are believed to be near capacity.

Meanwhile, no community has volunteered to host the “final” storage site. - Japan Times.

MAJOR STORM ALERT: Double Whammy Drenching In Japan - Super Typhoon Francisco May Follow Typhoon Wipha's Path; Powerful Cyclone Will Bring Thunderstorms, Strong Winds And Torrential Rainfall; Could Cause Increased Radioactivity At Fukushima Nuclear Plant!

October 18, 2013 - JAPAN - Just one week following a deadly dousing from Typhoon Wipha, a second typhoon could deluge Japan. On the heels of Wipha comes super typhoon Francisco, about 250 miles west-northwest of Guam, tracking north-northwestward.

Typhoon Francisco (NOAA)

Long-term track guidance takes super typhoon Francisco on a course generally towards Japan, with another round of rain and wind possible some time between Wednesday and Friday next week.

Over the last 36 hours, Typhoon Francisco has rapidly strengthened and, with maximum sustained winds around 155 mph, is the equivalent of a high-end category 4 hurricane.  As its peak winds exceed 150 mph, it has earned super typhoon status.

Its current satellite presentation exhibits the traits of an extremely powerful cyclone, with a well-defined eye surrounded by heavy thunderstorms.

Francisco is expected to hold its own over the weekend, before steady weakening is forecast next week.

By next Wednesday, around the time Francisco may be approaching Japan, peak winds are expected to have decreased to 80-85 mph.

Still, should even a much weakened Francisco make a direct hit on Japan, it would likely bring a second round of torrential rain following up to 33 inches of rain from Wipha.

Wipha’s rain caused mudslides and flooding, leading to 18 deaths.  At the Fukushima nuclear plant, the level of radioactivity spiked after heavy rains may have lifted contaminated soil according to EuroNews.

The Joint Typhoon Warning Center cautions forecast confidence for Francisco’s track is low, so it’s certainly possible the storm just grazes or avoids Japan altogether. - Washington Post.

Western Pacific Weather Forecast.
Typhoon Francisco is set to become one of the strongest storms on the face of the earth during 2013. The good news is that the max intensity of this rapidly developing storm system will likely be well over open ocean and away from any land areas. Unless you are unfortunate shipper travelling near this storm most people should be ok through the weekend.

WATCH: Typhoon Francisco eyes Japan - October 18, 2013.

WATCH: Typhoon Francisco Peaking Intensity of 314kph winds - October 19, 2013.

It is by next week where things start to get interesting. Francisco is forecast to weaken as it encounters an increase in vertical wind shear east of the southern Japanese islands. But it still could impact Okinawa and the Amami islands and likely Western Japan as a Typhoon by mid-week.

This forecast in the video above is still very long range and a lot could change prior to then.

Francisco is the 27th named storm of 2013, with a slow start to the season it seems to have peaked a little later than expected. Three Typhoon have been seen in the western pacific during the past week alone and it has been the busiest October in nearly a decade in the Tropics. - WPW.

SIGNS IN THE HEAVENS: A Celestial Phenomenon - Watch Partial Lunar Eclipse LIVE Tonight!

October 18, 2013 - SPACE - The full moon will appear to get a tiny bite taken out of it as it undergoes a shallow partial eclipse today. (See lunar eclipse pictures.)

Keen sky-watchers may notice that October's full moon, known traditionally as the Hunter's Moon, will lose just a bit of silvery luster tonight as part of its southern limb gradually dims. What is happening is that Earth's outer, pale shadow is falling on the outer edge of the lunar disk.

The celestial phenomenon, known officially as a penumbral lunar eclipse, may be a bit tricky to catch in the sky with the eye, however, since the shading effect will be quite subtle.

Armchair astronomers can watch a live feed of the eclipse, thanks to SLOOH. The Internet-based space-tracking service is broadcasting the eclipse with its robotic telescopes on the Canary Islands (map) starting at 4:30 p.m. EDT (23:30 UT).

"Penumbral lunar eclipses are the most subtle of all eclipses, but SLOOH can use techniques to bring out the shadow and reveal that something is indeed happening," said Bob Berman, an astronomer and columnist with Astronomy magazine. "Eclipses have always caught the fancy of the public ... They inspire fear, awe, superstition, you name it."

Here's what else you need to know about this lunar cover-up event:

What is a lunar eclipse?

A lunar eclipse occurs when the sun, Earth, and moon align. During total lunar eclipses, the entire moon is engulfed in Earth's darkest shadow. But during partial eclipses, the moon never completely goes dark or turns red—only a portion of its disk appears to darken slightly.

The moon passes through the edge of the Earth’s shadow at dusk on Friday October 18,
as seen from eastern North America.

"This is an eclipse where the circumstances place the moon only inside of the very light outer shadow of the Earth called the penumbra, rather than the darker inner shadow known as the umbra," said Larry Ciupik, an astronomer at Adler Planetarium in Chicago, Illinois.

"That outer shadow cone is so light that one normally barely notices the darkening moon as the eclipse progresses."

Who will see it?

In eastern North America, the eclipse will already be underway when the moon rises, with the deepest part of the event occurring at 7:50 p.m. EDT (23:50 UT). At that time, a slight shading will appear along the southeastern edge of the moon. Folks in the Mountain and Pacific time zones will probably miss out, however, because the moon will rise locally well after maximum eclipse is reached.

The eclipse will also be visible throughout South America, across Europe, and in Africa on Friday night. Meanwhile sky-watchers in Asia will get to witness the partial lunar eclipse at dawn on October 19. (Take a moon myths and mysteries quiz.)

All the stages of the eclipse will be visible across the Indian Ocean, central Asia, western Australia, Africa, and Europe.

WATCH: Watch Penumbral Lunar Eclipse LIVE.

When is the best time to watch?
The entire duration of the eclipse will be 4 hours and 10 minutes, commencing at 5:45 p.m. EDT (21:45 UT) tonight.

The most readily visible part of the eclipse, however, will be at 7:50 p.m. EDT (23:50 UT), when Earth's shadow is at its deepest/maximum coverage—a bit more than 75 percent of the lunar disk.

Why do lunar eclipses, even if they are partial, have such a hold on sky-watchers?

Although we understand the mechanics of lunar eclipses, they still have the power to amaze, "perhaps because eclipses are a direct illustration of those celestial mechanics," said Paul Cox, SLOOH host and outreach coordinator.

"There is something deep within us that is struck with awe when we see nature's 'big events'—and eclipses of any variety certainly fall into that category."

What if I miss this one?

Generally, between two and four lunar eclipses occur each year, so no need to fret. Next year, two much more dramatic total lunar eclipses will occur, one on April 15 and one on October 18. - National Geography.

WEATHER ANOMALIES: An Eerie Sight - Most Massive And Rare Tornado Strikes Greek Island?!

October 18, 2013 - GREECE - An eerie sight greeted residents of Rhodes, Greece, early Thursday morning when a tornado formed just off the coast of the island of Rhodes.

An impressive video was captured of this rare event near Rhodes. A large rotating column of air is seen in this video and note the multiple, smaller funnel clouds.

Fortunately, only minimal damage was reported, according to Severe Weather Europe and, judging by the video, the worst of the weather remained off shore.

WATCH: Rare tornado hits Greece.

A potent cold front slicing eastward spawned severe thunderstorms Thursday that impacted islands in the Aegean sea as well as parts of western Turkey.

The island of Rhodes, located in the southern Aegean Sea, does experience thunderstorms from time to time, but tornadoes are not all that common.

WATCH: YouTube user sandblast basshead captured this video of wind-whipped rain and structural damage.

Rainfall amounts between 30 and 50 mm were common near Rhodes as the storms swept through.

While the tornadoes are not uncommon in Europe, the United States is home to more frequent twisters. A lack of a cold, dry air source limits the intensity and frequency of tornadoes in much of Europe.

Stormy weather was also found farther north in Europe. A storm system moving across Germany brought damaging winds to some locations in the northern part of the country. Numerous observing stations reported wind gusts to 64 km/hour (40 mph).

Reports of downed trees suggest that some locations were hit by even stronger gusts.

Quiet weather is expected for Greece and surrounding areas through the weekend and into next week due to a large dome of high pressure. Elsewhere in Europe, bouts of showers will keep the United Kingdom and the rest of the western Europe unsettled. - AccuWeather.

FIRE IN THE SKY: Big Asteroid 2013 TV135 Buzzes Past Earth And Will Again In 19 Years - 410-Meter Rock "May Collide" With Our Planet In 2032, One Of The Most Dangerous Asteroid On Record!

October 18, 2013 - SPACE - One of the most dangerous asteroids on record zipped close by Earth last month.

It made headlines on Thursday, when reports said that there's a chance it could strike our planet in less than 20 years. Such a collision could unleash a force as powerful as a couple of thousand atomic bombs.

A potentially catastrophic asteroid has been discovered by astronomers, who say there’s a slim
chance that the 410-meter-wide minor planet will crash into Earth in 2032, creating
a blast 50 times greater than the biggest nuclear bomb.

But NASA was quick to calm nerves and point out some very good news. The most dangerous known asteroids don't really pose much of a threat. And there are very few of them.

Also, the chances that this one, which the Ukrainian astronomers who discovered it named 2013 TV135, will collide with Earth are extremely slim, NASA said in a statement it called "a reality check."

The space agency is 99.998% certain that when it whooshes back around the planet in 2032, it will simply sail past us again.
The probability of it striking Earth currently stands at 1:63,000, and even those odds are fading fast, as scientists find out more about the asteroid.

"This is a relatively new discovery," said Don Yeomans, manager of NASA's NEO Program. "With more observations, I fully expect we will be able to significantly reduce, or rule out entirely, any impact probability for the foreseeable future."

2013 TV135 was discovered on October 8, while NASA was closed during the government shutdown. And already it looks to soon be joining the ranks of the more than 10,000 known near-Earth objects that are virtually certain to cause us no harm.

Reuters / NASA / JPL-Caltech / Handout.

But until then, it has the distinction of having a danger rating of 1 out of a possible 10 on the Torino Impact Hazard Scale, the system that gauges the danger of impact destruction by asteroids.
The 1 rating means that it poses "no unusual level of danger." There is "no cause for public attention or concern."

Almost all other asteroids that scientists have discovered rank a 0 on the scale. There is another asteroid with a danger rating of 1. And it, too, is no cause for alarm, NASA says.

September's close pass
The close pass 2013 TV135 made on September 16 was not a near miss. At a distance of 4.2 million miles as it flew by, it was more than 15 times as far away from Earth as the moon.

That pales by compare to the closest shave the Earth got from an asteroid of considerable size in recorded history.

On February 15 this year, asteroid 2012 DA14, which measured 150 feet wide, slipped in below the moon's orbit and squeaked by our planet just 17,200 miles from its surface.

A diagram shows the orbit of an asteroid named 2013 TV135 (in blue), which made headlines in September 2013
when it passed closely by Earth. The probability of it striking Earth currently stands at 1 in 63,000, and
even those odds are fading fast as scientists find out more about the asteroid. It will most likely
swing past our planet again in 2032, according to NASA.

The one that passed by in September is big, with a diameter of 1,300 feet. That's the size of four football fields, but it does not quite make it an Earth crusher.
An asteroid needs to be at least twice as large to advance into that league.

"We believe anything larger than one to two kilometers (about 0.6 to 1.2 miles) could have worldwide effects," NASA said in a statement.

Russian divers find huge suspected meteorite chunk

Near passes daily
Two behemoths in that size range will pass by planet Earth in the next three months at similar distances as 2013 TV135. NASA says that neither will hit us.

Near asteroid passes are common. They pretty much occur daily, if not two or three times a day, NASA says.

They come, and they go, and they leave the Earth in peace.

In addition, particles from space bombard our planet every minute -- at a rate of 100 tons a day, NASA says.

You eat them; you drink them; you breathe them. Much of you and everything else on Earth contains them.

Distant catastrophe
Though it seems Earth is safe for now, there is such a thing as a doomsday asteroid.

Scientists say it is likely that the impact of an asteroid over six miles wide wiped out dinosaurs along with much of the life on Earth 65 million years ago.

The man behind 2013 TV135 asteroid discovery, Gennady Borisov from
the Crimean Astrophysical Observatory.

More like it will come, NASA says.

But they only turn up once every "few million years."

That may give humanity some time to find a way of dealing with it. - CNN.

GLOBAL VOLCANISM: Global Volcano Report For October 18, 2013 - Updates On Klyuchevskoy, Shiveluch, Semeru, Fuego, Dukono, Veniaminof, Popocatépetl, Santiaguito, And Pacaya!

October 18, 2013 - WORLDWIDE VOLCANOES - The following constitutes the new activity, unrest and ongoing reports of volcanoes across the globe, courtesy of  Volcano Discovery.

Klyuchevskoy (Kamchatka)After perhaps a short decrease in activity or more likely, simply the absence of direct observations due to bad weather, the volcano continues to erupt violently with lava fountains from the summit and lava flows on the flank:

Ash column rising from Klyuchevskoy volcano this morning.

WATCH: Klyuchevskoy volcano lava fountains.

Shiveluch (Kamchatka)As if it was jealous of Klyuchevskoy, the other volcano currently in violent eruption, Shiveluch has increased its activity recently. Dome growth has gained speed again, producing more frequent avalanches as well as explosions. Several explosions occurred during the past 24 hours sending ash plumes to 20-23,000 ft (6-7 km) altitude and drifting east.

Ash explosion from Shiveluch this morning (KVERT webcam)

A large SO2 plume, indicator of the arrival of fresh magma, can be seen on NOAA satellite data as well.

Semeru (East Java, Indonesia):
A pilot observed a small ash eruption this morning. The volcano had recently been very calm, but this could be a sign it is getting more active again.

Dukono (Halmahera):
Elevated explosive activity (strombolian to vulcanian type) continues. An explosion this morning produced an ash plume rising to 7,000 ft altitude.

Veniaminof (Alaska Peninsula, USA):
AVO has lowered the alert level to yellow, as it appears that no new eruptive activity has occurred during the past days. The eruption is not considered over yet, but might be simply pausing and could resume any time (such as the volcano did before).

Popocatépetl (Central Mexico)
Following a small increase in the frequency of small explosive emissions during the previous days, activity has now decreased again to averages of less than 1 emission per hour. At night, crater glow remains visible.

Crater glow from Popocatépel this morning.

Santa María / Santiaguito (Guatemala):
The volcano is in its most typical state of activity. After a few days with less (recorded) activity, the volcano's lava dome has again produced a number of small to moderate explosions with ash plumes rising up to about 700 m yesterday. Glow was observed at the eastern rim of the Caliente dome, which suggests that slow lava extrusion has resumed there as well.

Pacaya (Guatemala):
Strombolian activity continues at low to moderate levels with little variations over the past days. Explosions with low ash content eject incandescent lava bombs to up to about 50 m above the rim of Mackenney crater.

Fuego (Guatemala)
Activity has decreased and shifted back to be mainly mildly explosive. INSIVUMEH reported a few explosions with ash plumes of about 300 m height yesterday. The lava effusion has decreased. The lava flow was still active yesterday morning, but only 150 m long.

Thousands Of Cattle Dying Due To Disease Spreading Across Karnataka, India.
The Animal Husbandry Department has reiterated that the
cattle disease is 'under control.' —File photo
The foot-and-mouth disease appears only to be spreading geographically and in intensity across the State, even as the Animal Husbandry Department reiterates that the cattle disease is “under control”.

By Wednesday, the disease had claimed 3,060 head of cattle (since September 1), according to official figures with the department, a significant jump from last week’s casualty figure of 2,060. Another 23,500 animals have been infected with the virus, as against 16,573 last week.

The disease, which so far had South Karnataka under its grip, now appears to have spread to several other districts, including those in the north of the State such as Bidar, Bellary and Belgaum.

Deputy Director of the Animal Husbandry Department Sriram Reddy, however, said the disease was “under control” and that the department was continuing its “ring vaccination” of cattle within a specified radius of affected villages.

The disease has been reported from 2,312 villages in the State, he added.

While officials assumed that the disease would abate once the monsoon retreated by the end of September, the weather has only remained cloudy and wet and therefore, conducive for the spread of the disease.

“The virus is highly contagious but also a fragile one. A spell of sunshine can help contain it. But what we have now is cloudy and damp weather which only assists in its spread,” said P. Giridhar, Joint Director of Institute of Animal Health and Veterinary Biologicals. Cattle infected with the disease are susceptible to an often-fatal secondary infection called haemorrhagic septicaemia, which has been responsible for most of the fatalities among cattle and zoo animals.

Authorities at the Bannerghatta zoo, which lost several animals to the disease last month, said that barring a few deer, no other species appear to have contracted the disease recently. - The Hindu.

Mass Die-Off Of Starfish And Sea Urchins Washes Up Along Coast Of Kamchatka, Russia.

In Avachinskaya bay on the waterfront of Petropavlovsk was a mass death of sea stars and sea urchins, reports BBC News .

Local residents discovered the dead animals on October 2. According to witnesses, one square meter of the coast could be up to 65 sea urchins and up to 12 stars. In this case, a pile of dead aquatic life along the shoreline stretches for 250 meters.

Experts Kamchatka Research Institute of Fisheries and Oceanography believe that the causes of death could be the consequences of a severe storm. At the same time, they do not exclude the possibility that marine life could be lost due to anthropogenic impact.

According to scientists, Avachinskaya lip polluted by oil products, phenols, detergents and salts of heavy metals. Contamination of waters was due to the fact that on the banks of rivers and Avacha Paratunka flowing into Avachinskayay lip, is a large part of the industrial and agricultural region. - KZ.  [Translated]

October 3, several tourists with a tour group to see the Xisha cruise departure. 4 afternoon, cruise to receive instruction stops all rich island, because a large number of dead birds found on the island. It is understood that a large number of dead birds and Typhoon "Butterfly" transit-related (travel agency for map) South China Sea, Haikou October 12 news (South China Sea Network reporter Fu Ling) "October 4, we Xisha Xisha full rich depth tour through the Island, as Before Typhoon 'Butterfly' transit reasons, many seabirds on the island after the ravages of the typhoon is already littered with corpses, emitting a stench. "October 12, a visitor to the South China Sea Network reporter said that in order to protect the environment Xisha, seabirds corpse should be treated as soon as possible. South China Sea Network reporter from three Shashi Government subsequently informed that the current clean-up work has commenced seabird carcasses, disinfection, defense, etc., are being implemented.

October 3, several tourists with a tour group to see the Xisha cruise departure. 4 afternoon, tour the island after the completion duck, cruises fast driving to the full rich island, cruises received instructions to stop all rich island, because it has numerous seabird corpses all over the beach. "For the safety of tourists, there were sent on the go, came back and said the smell is very heavy. For security reasons, we will cancel the whole Fudao viewing." Says Zhang Xiaolong time tour guides.

In this regard, Hainan Province, deputy director of wildlife protection Jenny Mok said that if you really have a lot of dead seabirds in the Xisha full rich island, the sea would inevitably cause pollution. From the general approach, it should be removed as soon as possible seabird carcasses for sound processing, the surrounding environment must also be disinfected.

Three Shashi government an official told reporters, Typhoon "butterfly" after all not only rich Island, Xisha islands also left many dead bodies of many seabirds. Because all the rich island is uninhabited island, seabird habitat more than the other islands, which also caused all the rich than the larger island seabird carcasses. "Typhoon 'Butterfly' brings us relatively large, many islands are subject to varying degrees of damage. Currently, we are already doing reconstruction work, seabirds carcass disposal are underway."

The official said that the current full-rich island has been cleaned twice, but because there have been seabirds stay, coupled with limited human and material resources, and not all cleaned up, there is a small seabird corpses remain. "

Professor Leung said, tourists and local governments do not need to do any cleanup of these dead birds, not to worry there. "They are dead, but the body is still healthy, there will be other animal nature of these bodies is doing, this is the law of nature." - Kaixian. [Translated]

Thousands Of Fish Die Suddenly Causing "Shock" To Local Farmers In Magelang, Indonesia.
Thousands of fish in pond farms in the Housing Department of Health, Kramat Village North, Northern District of Magelang, Magelang died suddenly. The incident made the local fish farmers to panic.

Sumardi, one of the guards said he was surprised when the fish was about to feed the fish in the morning because he found the fish was floating and dead. He did not know the exact cause of death is ready to harvest the fish.

"I was shocked, how many fish have been floating dead and turned on. I do not know why," said Sumardi met on Thursday (10/10/2013).

Sumardi suspect, there are others who deliberately contaminate pool water with harmful substances. Therefore, some time after the incident, he was draining the pond and then replace it with a new and apparently surviving fish could survive in the pond.

"We suspect there are those who deliberately poison the pond. Swimming ponds in another location is fine. But we're not sure because not enough evidence, "he said.

In the pond, said Sumardi, there are dozens of ponds filled with various kinds of fish consumption. Such as carp, tilapia, fish and pomfret braskap. This condition makes the farmers suffered losses of up to tens of millions of dollars.

Meanwhile, Kelly Hardjanto, Executing field of Fisheries Department of Agriculture, Animal Husbandry and Fisheries (Disperterikan) states Magelang City has checked in and took water samples and fish carcasses.

"The results of the examination of water and visual observation, no traits that fish that died was caused by pests or disease. Usually if you have pests, there are physical fish peeling, or other spots. But this does not exist," Kurnia said.

Nevertheless, it has not been able to conclude the cause of death of the fish belong to the Pomegranate Mina Group. For sure, it will send the pond water samples to the Laboratory Center for Environmental Engineering in Yogya. While the fish carcasses will be sent to the FDA Yogyakarta.

"We can not confirm whether or not there is the element of intent. That's not our authority. To be sure, we will first check the water level, "he said. - Kompas. [Translated]

20 TONS Of Fish Have Died In Lake Sebu In South Cotabato, Philippines.
Around 20 metric tons (MT) of harvestable Tilapia and Pangasius were devastated as another fish kill hit anew some portions of the critical Lake Sebu in South Cotabato in the last three days.

Lake Sebu Mayor Antonio Fungan said Wednesday the fish kill, which was the first incident that occurred in the area this year, has already affected an estimated 60 fish cages situated in parts of three lakeside villages.

He said the fish kill was initially monitored on Monday in portions of Purok Rosas and the main section of Barangay Poblacion.

The mayor said their personnel were still determining the extent of the damage caused by the incident but local fish cage operators initially pegged a loss of nearly P1 million.

Citing their initial assessment, Fungan said the latest fish kill in the area was caused anew by “kamahong,” a phenomenon that is mainly caused by the sudden rise in the water’s temperature.

“It happened after a series of heavy rains along the lake,” he said in a radio interview.

“Kamahong,” which usually occurs during the rainy season, triggers the rise of sulfuric acid in the lake’s waters that eventually caused the massive fish kill, provincial fishery coordinator Rex Vargas earlier said.

“It occurs when cold rainwater, which is heavier than warm water, settles at the abyssal zone of the lake. This causes the water upturn or upwelling of warm water carrying silts, sediments, and gases such as hydrogen sulfide, ammonia, sulfur and methane gas produced by the decomposing organic matter such as fish feeds,” he explained.

Vargas said such situation results in the reduction of dissolved oxygen in the water, “forcing fishes to take in oxygen directly from the atmosphere and eventually die.”

Last year, around 57 MT of Tilapia were destroyed in two fish kills at the lake that were blamed on “kamahong.”

The initial fish kill in January 2012 ravaged some 48.55 MT of Tilapia. It affected 48 fish cage owners and left a total damage of P3.8 million based on tilapia’s market price of P80 per kilo.

In August last year, an additional 8,000 kilograms of Tilapia valued at P650,000 were destroyed in another fish kill that affected 14 fish cages at the lake.

Fungan admitted that the recorded fish kills have worsened in the past several years due to the deterioration of the lake’s condition as triggered by the overcrowding fish cages and the over-utilization of fish feeds.

The municipal government pushed last year for a voluntary dismantling of fish cages in overcrowded portions of the lake but only a few operators heeded the move.

“This time, we’ll make sure that our fish cage operators will cooperate with us because the lake is now very much overcrowded, to the extent that its dissolved oxygen supply could no longer meet their requirements,” he said.

Following twin fish kills last year, the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) central office recommended a moratorium on the fish cage operations in Lake Sebu, which it described as already over-polluted and on the brink of devastation.

BFAR also noted that the lake is considered overcrowded with fish cages, which already covered 35 percent of its waters or way beyond the 10 percent allowed by law.

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources earlier placed Lake Sebu’s carrying capacity at around 320 fish cages.

But the lake’s fish cages have so far reached a total of 4,586 or around 13 times beyond its capacity. - Minda News.

50,000 POUNDS Of Dead Fish Discovered Along 12km Of River In Xiaoshan, China.
Times dispatch on October 9 in the morning, fishermen in Xiaoshan reclamation section of 19 Yuan Shien opened the door, found their fish in the pond are turned white, and shapeless floating on the surface. At 12 km on the river is also found dead fish of 5 families of fishermen.

Yuan Shien and several other fishermen who found that Tian agriculture development company of pig farms across the river is sewerage. Hangzhou tianyuan company officials made it clear that, there are not the way to river pollution. Currently, Xiaoshan District Xiaoshan agricultural, fishery management station as well as Agency has been involved in coordinating to investigate the matter.

The most severe loss of fish ponds fish kills nearly 30,000 kg

Yuan Shien told journalists, themselves living in ponds, 9th, he was preparing to salvage some of the freshest fish in the morning to the market to sell, as I opened the door, there is a breath smelled coming. He found his belly turned white all the fish floating in the River, flies flying around, the biggest fish kills seven or eight pounds, died primarily fish and crabs in baotou. "The water is full of pig manure, stink so much!"

Yuan Shien said he saw the West Bank of the pig farms use large excavators on the Riverside wall holding an approximately 8 meters long, in the sewage discharged into the River from there. On October 12, the drain is blocked, "they also has a small drain at the gate, also in the row of pig manure, on the edge of the drain of fish have died. ”

Reporter went to the Hangzhou tianyuan agricultural development co of pig farms, pig farms North of the gates saw this small outfall. The outfall is one of less than half a metre in diameter cement pipe, but has seen a sewage outflow, and under the outfall is the possibility of fish ponds. Reporters saw still has large areas of dead fish in the pond crowd on the shore, water gel with a layer of oil, gives off a terrible odor.

And the River are separated by a road, Zhu Dashu home pond, he told reporters, two days before his side played a dead fish floating in the River, we are seeing these fish has been dead for half a week, "the river has become a stinking River, don't stink".

Reporters found that a blue hose to connect to Uncle Chu's fishponds and this "stinking River", from Zhu Dashu reservoir and water flows into the river. Zhu Dashu introduction, connected with the river is his reservoir of domestic shrimp, shrimp ponds when his home when water is scarce, will bring water from the River into the pond. Similarly, prawn pond water level is high, it will put water into the river. But since the beginning of October 8, the river mud, he won't draw water into their reservoir.

According to Xiaoshan on fishery management station statistics, reported a total of 3 families of fishermen, Yuan Shien ponds at the South side of the River, the injured are relatively mild, a total loss of 6,879 kg fish. Lai, two of the most seriously affected fishermen and Zhao Chengrong families, loss of 29,000 kg and 12,000 kg respectively.

Outside the pig farm in no way to the sewage

Facing the fishermen questioned, we interviewed Tian agriculture development company pig farm. Says very firmly told reporters that pig farms have absolutely no deliberate discharges to the outside. "We have a very regular sewage system, sewage is the outward to hit one's own brand, certainly not. ”

Fishermen say outfall on pig farm East of the River, can still be seen now-turned dirt, traces of mining is very clear. And the excavation is in the immediate vicinity of the pig farm built fish pond, fish pond water floating aquatic plants, and no sign of dead fish and foul.

Gu Haihua, Deputy General Manager of Hangzhou tianyuan agriculture explained that this drain is 8th dig, but outward emission is the water in the pond. "Fett" torrential rains brought on by Typhoon were fired by this water level of all rivers and ponds, pond side of the pig farm was staff quarters, pond water level is too high, dorms are in danger of flooding. In order to flood, dug up in pig farm East of the River, fish pond water rivers flow together with the wall.

Gu Haihua said: "all the water levels in the reservoir are very high that day, the rain is so heavy, water will flow everywhere. "While farm ponds and no sign of dead fish.

And we saw in the South side of pig farm's Gate outfall, Director of interpretation, the outfall discharge a small amount of sewage, but definitely not emissions. Drain only at the request of two fishermen near opening, usually kept locked. Rows of small quantities of pig manure is in fact used as fish feed, "within the last two weeks, the drain has not used".

It is understood that this section of coast there are two farms and a chicken farm. Then said, "Buffett" after the heavy rain, tianyuan agriculture there is no discharge to the outside, taking into account the water levels are very high at that time, nor does it preclude a sewage overflow. But there are several other cattle, causing fish deaths still requires fishery Bureau and environmental protection department investigations. And Guo Haihua said, because he did not discharge, and environmental sectors, so unless there is a clear data or pig farms will not consider bear fishermen's losses. - 163.  [Translated]

FIRE IN THE SKY: The Chelyabinsk Meteor Recovered - Huge Half-Ton Chunk Of Russian Meteorite Lifted From Lakebed! [VIDEO]

October 18, 2013 - RUSSIA - The largest-discovered fragment of a Russian meteorite, weighing around 570 kilograms, has been lifted from the bed of Lake Chebarkul in the Urals.

The huge meteorite chunk split into three pieces when scientists tried to weigh it. The precise weight could not be established because the heavy object broke the scales.

The preliminary examination... shows that this is really a fraction of the Chelyabinsk meteorite. It’s got thick burn-off, the rust is clearly seen and it’s got a big number of indents. This chunk is most probably one of the top ten biggest meteorite fragments ever found,” said Sergey Zamozdra, associate professor of Chelyabinsk State University, as cited by Interfax news agency.

He explained that it was important to establish the weight of the fragment in order to learn more about the qualities of the whole of the meteorite.

The lifted chunk was taken to the regional natural history museum. The plan is to have a small sample of it X-rayed to determine what minerals it consists of.

Several earlier attempts to raise this massive chunk of meteorite, found by divers at the beginning of September, failed.

The divers’ mission was hampered by a number of factors. The meteorite fragment lay 20 meters under water, buried under a thick layer of mud.

Estimates concerning the layer of sediments covering the chunk were more optimistic than what the divers actually had to deal with. It took them 10 days to pump the mud away from the rock.

The divers had to do their job in conditions of zero visibility, due to the extremely muddied waters of the lake. Storms further contributed to delays in lifting the celestial body.

The largest lifted chunk of meteorite so far weighed 11 kilograms. Scientists on Wednesday confirmed its extraterrestrial nature.
