According to Colombia's Institute of Hydrology, Meteorology and Environmental Studies, the La Nina weather system that triggered the historic deluge of storms and floods over the last year is coming to an end, and will gradually ease in June and July. Government officials, farmers and the general population can't wait for this prediction to materialize, as widespread and persistent floods has created problematic effects on the land, where a wide range of ground movements and geological phenomenon, such as landslides, landslip, rock falls, deep failure of slopes, sinkholes, and shallow debris flows have been consistently experienced.
The latest incident incident of slope instability has left several sections of the South American country separated and totally cut off.
Yopal, at around one am on Sunday 29 May, there was total closure of the road that leads to Peace Yopal Ariporo, at Kilometer 2.4, where there was a shift in the banks and the collapse of the embankment , which brought the downfall of several power poles and damage to municipal water in the capital of Casanare. The closure of this road left completely incommunicado Yopal to the northern department of Casanare, which includes the municipalities of Nunchía, Tamara, Pore, Paz de Ariporo, Hato Corozal, Sácama, Salina, Trinidad, San Luis de Palenque and Trinidad and also in Arauca department is cut off from the interior. The mayor of Yopal said that due to the damage that the modules 2 and 3 of the treatment plant, municipal drinking water, will present a prolonged shortage of water in the locality. At the meeting of the members of the Local Committee for Disaster Prevention and sent a three-point statement which reads as follows:
1. Henceforth must make rational use of water for an indefinite shortage. 2. Traffic was suspended indefinitely with the North, Department of Casanare by blocking the road. 3. It formed a technical committee composed of City Planning, Municipal Works Department, the Water Company, Sewerage and Cleanliness of Yopal-EAAAY-CORPORINOQUIA winters and the Government, to assess and generate a diagnosis of structural damage in the affected area. The Mayor of Yopal reported an Operating Plan which includes executing works to install a bypass (step) that enables to provide at least untreated water to the inhabitants of Yopal, therefore is asking the community to make rational use of water .
